What Is Your Character’s Dream?

I’m asking this question because it’s important to know your character inside and out. I know I say this a lot but it’s true. If you don’t know your characters then neither will your readers.

Your character’s personal dream may have nothing to do with the plot of the story or it may be the driving force behind it.

Katniss Evergreen from the Hunger Games, for example, had a dream of keeping her family safe. This was also her driving force to many of the choices she made throughout the story. So her dreams tied into the plot.

But your character can have a dream not relating to the plot of the story. It can even be trivial like to be invited to a dance or asked out by a guy. The important thing is knowing what your character desires in their heart.

Can you have a fully developed character without them having a dream?

I don’t think you can. Of course, you’re open to disagree with that but having a passion for something is what drives us to make the choices we make every day. When we as humans love something then we’re more motivated to do things to reach our dream that we otherwise wouldn’t have any desire to do.

What gives your character motivation?

Why does your character do the things they do? Why do they act they way they act? Why do they say the things they say? What are they getting out of it?

Your character’s dream plays a bigger role in the choices they make everyday because in the back of their mind they want to do everything that can to help them make their dream come true.

I ask you to think about your main character’s dream or goals. Does your character’s actions reflect their dreams or passions? If not, focus on incorporating their dreams into the way your characters sees life and the choices they make.

I hope this helps you on your writing journey
